SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Approximately 40 student-athletes, 15 staff and 12 donors participated in a beach beautification project at Goleta Beach on Sunday, Feb. 21. The event was a joint effort of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB) program and the Gauchos Give community outreach initiative.
The Gauchos Give event was intended to have student-athletes, donors and athletics department staff and coaches come together on a project that would serve the greater Santa Barbara community. The UCSB Athletics Department encourages and reinforces the idea that we are a family and are committed to collectively serving our community.
"Well, we're obviously happy that we could organize an event that would help to maintain and preserve the beauty of our California beaches," said Associate Athletics Director Steve O'Brien, event organizer. "But of equal importance, I was really pleased with how many student-athletes, donors, staff and coaches joined forces for this community service activity, reinforcing our collective commitment to the greater Santa Barbara community and illustrating the breadth of the Gaucho Athletics family."
The next Living Scholar Life Skills event will be on April 1, 2010, when former UCSB water polo player Russ Hafferkamp will deliver a presentation based on his book, "Careerball," illustrating ways for student-athletes to utilize the skills they develop as athletes well beyond their athletics careers.
