SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — UCSB men's basketball head coach Bob Williams, women's head basketball coach Carlene Mitchell, and men's volleyball's Jake Staahl will be the guests on this week's edition of "Talk'n Gauchos," UCSB Athletics' weekly radio show.
"Talk'n Gauchos" is broadcast live every Tuesday night from 6-7 p.m. at the Beachside Bar and Cafe, located on Goleta Beach and hosted by Gerry Fall - The Voice of the Gauchos. Fans are encouraged to come watch the show in person for the chance to meet the guests as well as participate in a raffle for UCSB and Beachside prizes.
The show can be heard over the air on KZSB AM 1290. Fans can also hear the show online at UCSBgauchos.com.
Bob Williams and the men's basketball team are coming off a tough loss to seventeenth-ranked and soon-to-be conference rival San Diego State last Thursday night. Junior guard Kyle Boswell led the Gauchos that night, putting up new career highs in points (23) and three point baskets (7). Boswell and the Gauchos will host their only home game of the month this Saturday, Dec. 15.
Carlene Mitchell's squad was able to snap a three-game losing streak in last week's win at Loyola Marymount. Senior forward Sweets Underwood had a career night against the Lions, putting up a career best 22 points and grabbing 11 boards for her third double-double of the season. Underwood's exploits earned her Big West Player of the Week honors. The Gauchos will head north this weekend to take on Seattle in a Saturday matinee. They will host two marquee matchups later this month, as Kentucky (Dec. 21) and Kansas State (Dec. 29) will visit the Thunderdome.
Jake Staahl – a sophomore middle blocker on the men's volleyball team – will be on the program as this week's "Great Example." The "Great Example" campaign highlights the impressive life skills of UC Santa Barbara's student-athletes. As a freshman, Jake hit a sky-high .444 in 12 matches. When off the court, all Jake does is make the Dean's List and contribute to the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Jake and the rest of the men's volleyball team will be hosting the eight-team UCSB Asics Invitational from Jan. 4-5, featuring high-quality squads such as defending NCAA Champions UC Irvine and historical powerhouse UCLA. With only three more home basketball games in the month of December, chances are limited to come support the Gauchos. To get your tickets, click here, or call 893-UCSB.
