Bill Mahoney is UCSB's Assistant Athletics Director for
Communications.
Mahoney arrived in Santa Barbara on September 9, 1984 and never
left. He was initially an Assistant Sports Information
Director. In 1988, he became Director of Media Relations and
in 1991 he was promoted to Assistant Athletics Director, Media
Relations. In 2008, the office was changed from Media
Relations to Communications.
Mahoney came to UCSB after spending three years as a Public
Relations Assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers and two summers as
a public relations intern with the California Angels. He also
spent a year as the Sports Editor of The Orange City News in
Orange, Calif., worked as an assistant media coordinator for the
basketball competion at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles,
was the Assistant Sports Editor of the Daily 49er at Long Beach
State and interned at the Long Beach Press-Telegram helping to
cover the Superior Court.
During his time at UCSB, Mahoney worked seven NCAA Final Fours as
part of the staff of the National Association of Basketball
Coaches. In that capacity, he assisted in the staging of the
annual NABC Collegiate All-Star Game, the NABC Fan Jam and the Nike
Hoop Summit.
A graduate of Long Beach State with bachelor degrees in political
science and journalism, Mahoney also spent a year at the school
working on his master's degree in political science. He is married
to the lovely Maria and has an amazing teenage daughter,
Emilie.
