21 Gauchos Earn Spring/Winter Academic All-Big West Honors

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara’s winter and spring sports teams had 21 athletes named to the Big West Academic All-Conference squads, the league announced.

To be included on the Academic All-Big West Teams, athletes must possess a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above, have been at their respective school for at least two full years and competed in a minimum of half of their team’s competitions.

The group of Gaucho honorees was led by women’s tennis and women’s track and field, each of which had five members on their respective teams.  The women’s tennis players who were honored included senior Erica Cano (Philosophy), juniors Paola Cos (Global Studies) and Kiersten Meehan (English), and sophomores Stacy Yam (Global Studies) and April Scatliffe (Undeclared).  Women’s track and field athletes included seniors Cherise Dixon (Global Studies), Helena Montin (Micro Biology) and Jen Melton (Asian American Studies), junior Katherine Lee (Biological Sciences) and sophomore Lara Lewis (Pre-Psychology).

Men’s track and field had four honorees in juniors Sean Johnson (Philosophy), Winton Nguyen (Economics and Accounting), Oscar Pearson (Communication Studies) and Jacob Vowels (History).  Three women’s basketball players, led by graduate student Kirsten Tilleman (Environmental Studies), were named to the team.  Joining Tilleman were senior Sweets Underwood (Feminist Studies) and junior Madeline Campbell.

Four UCSB teams had one member apiece selected Academic All-Big West.  Men’s basketball junior Kyle Boswell (Mechanical Engineering), men’s tennis senior Benjamin Recknagel (Business Economics), women’s water polo senior Rachel Nelson (Biological Sciences) and softball junior Andriana Collins (Communication Studies) were all selected to their respective teams.
