UCSB Athletic Training is conducted by certified athletic trainers (ATC) from the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification. With a minimum of a Bachelor's degree through a CAATE accredited athletic training education program, the ATC is educated and skilled in all aspects of sports health care including prevention, recognition, immediate management, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Working directly under a physician, the ATC is an allied healthcare professional usually found in settings of secondary schools, colleges and universities, professional sports, clinics, and the industrial site.
The mission of the UCSB Athletic Training staff is first and foremost the care of the student-athlete. UCSB sponsors 20 NCAA Division I sports and we are committed to the total well being of all the student-athletes participating in these sports. We strive to provide the highest quality of medical care within the limits of our resources to maximize playing time and quality of performance in any given venue. We serve as liaisons between coaches, parents, doctors, athletes, and administrators. The athletic training staff operates within the policies outlined in the UCSB Athletic Training policies and procedures manual, the NCAA sports medicine handbook, and the NCAA manual.
The UCSB certified athletic training staff consists of six full-time athletic trainers. Our staff is responsible for ensuring that quality of care is provided to all student-athletes at UCSB. We are skilled in the latest techniques of prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. We also manage administrative duties including medical referrals, insurance billing, student development, pre-participation physical exams, and public relations. Each staff member is responsible for two to three teams and other various administrative duties. Additional responsibilities may also include duties from the athletics department and the athletics director.
