Title: Associate Athletics Director, Team Physician

Nicole Stern, MD, joined the UCSB Department of Intercollegiate Athletics in August 2013 as Team Physician.

Born in the California Bay Area, and raised in Tucson, Arizona, Dr. Stern graduated from Stanford University with a Bachelor’s degree in History. She returned to Tucson and graduated from the University of Arizona College of Medicine, Tucson Campus. After medical school, she remained at the University of Arizona and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in 2001.

Following residency and given her personal interest in sports medicine, Dr. Stern joined the faculty of the University of Arizona College of Medicine as a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. She practiced non-surgical orthopedics, while also serving as the Assistant Director of the Indians Into Medicine Program at the University of Arizona and as a volunteer team physician for minor league baseball in Tucson.

In 2003, Dr. Stern completed a one year fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine. While in Oklahoma for that year, Dr. Stern served as a team physician for Guthrie High School, Oklahoma City University, the University of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma City Blazers professional ice hockey Team, and the Oklahoma City Redhawks professional baseball team. 

A couple of months after completing her fellowship, Dr. Stern returned to Tucson, Arizona and joined the staff at the University of Arizona Campus Health Service. While working at the University of Arizona, she volunteered for four years as an assistant team physician for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, covering several games and athletic events. In 2004, Dr. Stern was appointed Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine given her role as a preceptor to medical students and an attending physician for the sports medicine fellowship program. 

After working at Campus Health for more almost 6 years, Dr. Stern left the University of Arizona to work briefly in private practice with a small group of orthopedic surgeons before joining the faculty of the University of Arizona College of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. In her position at the University of Arizona in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Stern supervised medical students and residents in Internal Medicine rotations, outpatient clinics, and on the hospital ward service. She also maintained a one half day sports medicine clinic where she practiced non-surgical orthopedics and served as a team physician for Pima Community College. While at Pima, Dr. Stern covered football, as well as men’s and women’s soccer.

In the fall of 2012, Dr. Stern came to UCSB and worked at the Student Health Service before transitioning to her position with the Athletic Department in August 2013.

She is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, President of the Association of American Indian Physicians from 2012-2013, and a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Sports Medicine.
