Thank-A-Thon Wraps Up Year In Gaucho Fund

UCSB's annual giving program to support student-athletes, teams and academic support through the Gaucho Fund is winding down its 2010-11 campaign. Over the next two weeks Gaucho student-athletes will be calling athletics donors to thank them for their annual support.

"It's been an outstanding season in terms of philanthropic giving to support UCSB Athletics, and once again, we have competed at the highest level in several of our sports, which complements the university's mission of being a top-tier institution," said Mark W. Massari, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. "Our donors and campus share in the process of developing leaders. It's exciting to be part of it all."

During the year over 60 outreach events for donors and teams resulted in a banner year of giving. The annual fund is paramount in supporting the scholarship, academic success and program needs of all 20 programs. To date, nearly 800 donors have contributed to the Gauchos this academic year and many have enjoyed benefits such as the "One Donation is Gold" priority seating and parking system and DARE magazine which highlights the success of UCSB's young men and women in the classroom, community and on the fields of play.

The unique Living Scholar level of giving, which pairs a donor and a student-athlete, has also grown from 35 donors two years ago to 75 this year. Generous gifts also assisted with the completion of several capital projects to support hosting of the 2010 NCAA national championship for men's soccer known as the "College Cup" in December. Over $1-millio of private gifts helped fund a new playing surface, scoreboard and entrance plaza and gate known as the "Curtice Gate" at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. However, donors to the Gaucho Fund mainly find enhancing the student-athletes' experience during their time at UCSB, the greatest benefit of all.

The "Thank-A-Thon" is a way for Gaucho student-athletes to say thank you back to their generous donors. Gifts to the Gaucho Fund can be made in the form of cash, stock, real estate, or a planned gift. Gifts to UCSB Athletics are tax-deductible as part of the UCSB Foundation.
