UCSB pitchers Matt Vedo and Andrew Vasquez both have broken into the school’s single-season top-10 in strikeouts and Vedo is just the sixth pitcher in school history to K at least 100 batters in a season. Vedo’s 104 punchouts (currently 5th) and Vasquez’s 95 (tied for sixth) have them just 13 strikeouts shy of tying the Gaucho record by teammates in a season. Barry Zito (123) and Bryan Noyes (89) currently hold the mark in the 1997 season. Entering this week, Vedo ranks fifth in the nation with his average of 11.75 strikeouts per nine innings and Vasquez is 26th at 10.39.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Junior righ-hander Joey Wagman tossed a complete-game on Friday night, giving Cal Poly a 5-1 victory over UC Santa Barbara in the opening game of a three-game series between the Big West Conference rivals.
Freshman Greg Mahle was recognized as one of the best two-way players when he was named to the College Baseball Hall of Fame John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Watch List. Mahle is one of just 20 players to be so honored. The Westminster, Calif. native went 5-for-10 with three RBI vs. Fullerton and is hitting .333 (10th in the Big West) with 28 RBI. The lefty has four saves overall this year and a 1.93 ERA in conference action.

IRVINE, Calif. – The good news for the UC Santa Barbara baseball team was that it snapped a 21-inning scoreless streak against UC Irvine on Sunday at Anteater Ballpark. The bad news is that UCSB's output was not enough in a 5-4 loss that allowed the Anteaters to sweep the weekend series.
