• Vasquez Named to National Watch List
Six-foot-six freshman left-hander Andrew Vasquez has been named to the College Baseball Hall of Fame Pitcher of the Year Watch List – one of just 51 pitchers in the nation to be so honored. Vasquez leads the Big West with his 1.79 ERA and his .190 batting average against is second. Vasquez's 73 K's are second-most behind his Friday opponent, UC Davis' Dayne Quist and the Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. native is seventh in the Big West with his 60.1 innings pitched.
• V is for Vertigan
Junior centerfielder Brett Vertigan was named the Big West's Player of the Week this past week after going 9-for-16 with eight runs scored as UCSB went 4-0. Vertigan, though, might need more space on his mantle as he is one of the best in the Big West in batting average (1st, .380), slugging percentage (2nd, .526), on-base percentage (2nd, .451), hits (1st, 65), runs (1st, 41), stolen bases (1st, 15), triples (1st, 6) and total bases (1st, 90).

Sophomore Brandon Trinkwon ranks in the top five in the Big West in batting average (3rd, .350), slugging percentage (3rd, .518) and on-base percentage (1st, .489).
• Strike a Pose
Two Gauchos rank among the nation's toughest to strike out as Brett Vertigan strikes out just once every 15.1 at-bats (51st) and Greg Mahle once every 14.3 at-bats (63rd).
• Hey Batter, Batter
UCSB's pitching staff has struck out an astounding 324 batters this season, which ties the squad for 10th all-time in single-season school history. The record is 428 by the 1984 team. At their current pace, the Gauchos are due to strike out 463 batters this season.
• Rubber Soul
UCSB's pitching staff boasts a 3.66 ERA setting the team on pace for consecutive sub-4.00 ERA's for the first time in two decades as the 2011 team's 3.65 ERA was the program's lowest since a 3.24 clip in 1984.
UCSB Quick Fact
With seven more wins, Andrew Checketts can become the winningest first-year head coach in UCSB history. Checketts, the 9th coach in program history, has already equaled, or surpassed, all but one previous coach's win totals in an inaugural season – Al Ferrer's 27 in 1981 are the standard.
By the Numbers
8.2 – Strikeouts per nine innings averaged by the UCSB pitching staff, ranking the squad 18th in the nation. The team's 324 K's ties it for 10th all-time in school history.
