The New York Yankees purchased the contract of former UCSB pitcher Kevin Gelinas from the Abilene Prairie Dogs, it was announced Monday.
Gelinas, who graduated from UCSB in 2011, was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2009 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, and then again by the New York Mets in 2010. On both occasions, Gelinas opted to continue his college education.
Gelinas joined the Prairie Dogs at the beginning of the 2012 season and has appeared in only sixteen, but in those sixteen games he has dominated the United League to the tune of a 4-1 record with a 2.04 ERA, a 0.74 WHIP, and 23 strikeouts in 17.2 innings. A big, power-pitching southpaw, Gelinas can reach up to 96 MPH on his fastball.
