• Digging for Gold
The current UCSB freshman class was ranked as the No. 12 recruiting class in the nation
by Baseball America, tops among all Big West schools. It was the first time the Gauchos
had appeared on the list in school history. The class was also ranked No. 18 by Perfect
Game, falling just short of CSU Fullerton's No. 17 ranking among Big West schools. OF
Andrew Calica and P's Connor Baits, Dylan Hecht, and Justin Jacome are just a few of the
recruiting standouts. In all, there are 20 new faces on the 2013 squad, including 15 freshmen
and five junior college transfers.
• It's A Little Drafty in Here
A number of current Gauchos have passed up opportunities to play professionally in
order to suit up at UCSB. Starting first baseman Tyler Kuresa was an 11th rd. selection of
the Minnesota Twins in 2010, while senior right hander Jared Wilson was taken in the 35th
rd. by the Twins in 2012. Three current freshmen were also selected in 2012, including OF
Andrew Calica (17th rd., CLE), SS Devon Gradford (34th. rd, OAK), and P Connor Baits
(23rd rd., NYM).
• Special K's
Andrew Checketts quickly made his stamp on the UCSB pitching staff in 2012, leading
the team to a school-record in strikeouts for a single season, with both Andrew Vasquez
(104) and Matt Vedo (112, drafted by SEA, 24th rd.) exceeding 100 punchouts apiece.
As a squad, the Gauchos compiled 451 strikeouts, which bested the previous record of
428 set in 1997. Only 215 of those strikeouts are returning, but with several young flamethrowers,
expect the Gauchos to rack up the K's once again.
• Sensational Skipper
Despite a .500 record in his first season, few could deny the progress shown by UCSB
in their first season under Andrew Checketts. Well the word is out. Andrew Checketts
picked up several honors over the offseason, including being named a "Coach on the Rise"
by Perfect Game and one of the "Top 10 Head Coaches Under 40" by Baseball America.
• American Boys
Following their stellar 2012 seasons, a pair of Gauchos were selected as Preseason All-
Americans. In December, sophomore lefty Andrew Vasquez was named to the Second
Team by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association after recording a 1.93 ERA
as a freshman, the fourth best full-season ERA in school history. Junior SS Brandon Trinkwon
was named to the Baseball America Second-Team after hitting .347 as a sophomore
and starting the Cape Cod League All-Star Game. Brandon was also noted as the top
defensive infielder in college baseball.
• Gauchos Over the Air
UCSB Athletics and the Santa Barbara News Press radio will broadcast a vast majority of
UCSB Baseball's games this season, with 30 games being carried over the air by AM 1290
and online through UCSBgauchos.com and another 17 games airing exclusively online.
