• Young and Talented
Of the eight pitchers to throw for the Gauchos against Fresno, five were freshmen. The
first year hurlers didn't just throw however, as they excelled, putting up a collective line of
1-0, 12 IP, 2.50 ERA,10 H, 12 K, and 2 BB. Domenic Mazza, Dylan Hecht, and Connor Baits
all had scoreless appearances, while Kenny Chapman earned a win on Saturday by retiring
the first 11 batters he faced and Justin Jacome struck out five in his 3.2 innings of work.

• Digging for Gold
The current UCSB freshman class was ranked as the No. 12 recruiting class in the nation
by Baseball America, tops among all Big West schools. It was the first time the Gauchos
had appeared on the list in school history. It was also ranked No. 18 by Perfect Game, falling
just short of CSU Fullerton's No. 17 ranking among Big West schools. In all, there are
20 new faces on the 2013 squad, including 15 freshmen and five junior college transfers.

• In the Plus
UCSB won the Fresno State series with a +8 run differential. The Gauchos had a +8 or
better differential in a three game series just three times in 2012.

• Run Producing Machines
The Gauchos received contributions from all parts of the lineup last weekend, resulting
in a 20 run outburst over three games. Seven different Gauchos recorded multiple RBIs
in the opening series - Woodward, Maris, Kuresa, Trinkwon, Newell, Venning, and Mahle.

• Sensational Skipper
Despite a .500 record in his first season, few could deny the progress shown by UCSB
in their first season under Andrew Checketts. Well the word is out. Andrew Checketts
picked up several honors over the offseason, including being named a "Coach on the Rise"
by Perfect Game and one of the "Top 10 Head Coaches Under 40" by Baseball America.

• American Boys
Following their stellar 2012 seasons, a pair of Gauchos were selected as Preseason All-
Americans. In December, sophomore lefty Andrew Vasquez was named to the Second
Team by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association after recording a 1.93 ERA
as a freshman, the fourth best full-season ERA in school history. Junior SS Brandon Trinkwon
was named to the Baseball America Second-Team after hitting .347 as a sophomore
and starting the Cape Cod League All-Star Game. Brandon was also noted as the top
defensive infielder in college baseball.

• Gauchos Over the Air
UCSB Athletics and the Santa Barbara News Press radio will broadcast a vast majority of
UCSB Baseball's games this season, with 30 games being carried over the air by AM 1290
and online through UCSBgauchos.com and another 17 games airing exclusively online.
