Calica Grabs Big West Field Player of the Week Honors
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Redshirt freshman center fielder Andrew Calica was named the Big West Field Player of the Week on Monday afternoon after helping the 10th-ranked Gauchos to a four-game sweep over Wagner College this past weekend by hitting .588 and driving in five runs.
With the strong week, Calica raised his season average to .437, which places him 11th in the country and third overall in the Big West Conference. He has now recorded a hit in 12 of UCSB's last 13 games and has reached base safely in 19 straight contests.
The Chula Vista, Calif. native collected three hits and at least one RBI in each of the first three games of the series, creating havoc for the Gauchos from the leadoff spot.
In the series opener, Calica went 3-4 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. He then went a combined 6-9 with four RBIs and three runs scored in Saturday's doubleheader. Despite going just 1-3 in Sunday's finale, he stole three bases and scored a pair of runs in the win.
Not just a potent bat, Calica was a stud in the outfield, running down several balls in the gaps that may have gone uncaught by slower fielders. He made a potentially game-saving play in the third inning of Friday's tilt when, trailing 2-0, he made a headlong dive into the left-center gap to make a catch that prevented at least one run and maybe more.
This is the first career conference Player of the Week for Calica, and the second such award for a Gaucho this season after Joey Epperson was honored on Mar. 3 after hitting .588 in leading the Gauchos to a win over then-No. 19 UCLA and a three-game sweep of Princeton.
Andrew and the rest of the Gauchos, who on Monday garnered a top-10 ranking for the first time since 1986 and are off to their best start to a season since 1984, will travel to Fresno State tomorrow night for a Tuesday showdown before hosting Hawai'i in a three-game series to open Big West Conference play this weekend.
All four of UCSB's games this week will be broadcasted over the air locally on AM 1290 – Santa Barbara News-Press Radio – and online through UCSBgauchos.com.
