Gauchos on the Air
UCSB Baseball will be available to stream all season long through BigWest.TV. This weekend you can catch UCSB Assistant Director of Baseball Operations Kevin Cannon handling play-by-play duties alongside Gaucho baseball's all-time winningest head coach Bob Brontsema providing color commentary. Cannon can be heard traditionally on all audio broadcasts, both home and road, while this week KCSB Sports Director Arthur Wilkie will be on the audio call.
UCSB Sweeps Hartford in Slugfest
The Gauchos racked up 30 runs on 36 hits to sweep a three-game series over Hartford at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium over the weekend. Hartford, an NCAA Regional team a season ago, was playing in its first games of the 2019 season while UCSB played its long-awaited home-opening series after rain forced a relocation of its originally scheduled opener. Behind strong pitching from Ben Brecht and Michael McGreevy, who combined for 12 strikeouts, the Gauchos surged past the Hawks 10-5 on Friday. Armani Smith led the offense with a homerun and was one of four players with multiple hits. Saturday saw a nine-strikeout performance from freshman Rodney Boone, while a four-run eighth, sparked by a game-tying home run off the bat of Thomas Rowan, propelled UCSB to a 6-4 win. The Gauchos completed the sweep with a 14-0 rout on Sunday as Tommy Jew and Kyle Johnson homered and 10 different players had a hit in the game.
Dashwood Gem Trips Up Trojans
Jack Dashwood dashed the Trojans hopes of putting any runs on the board Tuesday as the sophomore southpaw struck out a career-high 10 batters and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. It was the most strikeouts in a game for a Gaucho pitcher since Noah Davis struck out 10 against Tulane in February of the 2017 season. Dashwood picked up his second win of the season after completing seven innings and finishing with one earned run allowed on just two hits. In just two starts this year, his 17 strikeouts are half of his 2018 season total of 34, which he achieved in 54.2 innings. He has thrown 12 innings so far this year, boasting a 2.25 ERA.
Did Jew Know?
Tommy Jew has back-to-back games with leadoff homeruns, blasting a shot to left to open the floodgates in a 14-0 defeat over Hartford on Sunday, and hitting another in the first inning of a 2-1 win at USC on Tuesday. Jew came a double shy of the cycle on Tuesday night, going 3-for-4 in a pitcher's duel, and has already matched his 2018 season total with three triples.
UCSB is 65-67-3 all-time against Pepperdine in what has been an evenly matched historical record. Last season, the Waves edged the Gauchos in a pair of close games, 5-3 in an 11-inning affair that was called for darkness and completed at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium in May, along with a 3-1 defeat. This season, Pepperdine is 3-4, and have lost four straight after starting the year 3-0. The Waves are led by freshman catcher Charlie Welch (8-for-20, .400 BA, 1 HR, 6 RBI) and junior infielder Quincy McAfee (9-for-27, .333 BA, 1 HR, 6 R) at the plate while senior RHP Johnathan Pendergast (1-1, 2.70 ERA) is the ace of the staff and will start on Friday.
What a Start
Chris Troye was phenomenal in his first career start on Sunday afternoon, holding Hartford hitless into the fifth inning and striking out seven, ultimately allowing just one hit. After making 19 appearances out of the bullpen as a freshman in 2018, Troye is looking strong as the Sunday starter thus far.
Lights Out Lincoln
Junior righty Chris Lincoln collected his second save of the season on Tuesday night after entering in the eighth inning, and pitching out of a jam in both the eighth and ninth for the four-out save. Lincoln, a starter for UCSB last season, has been promising in relief, picking up a win in three innings of work against Hartford on Saturday. So far in 2019, Lincoln is 1-0 with a 1.08 ERA and nine strikeouts in 8.1 innings pitched.
Home Sweet Caesar
The Gauchos have fared extremely well at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium under Andrew Checketts, crafting a .677 winning percentage (144-67-3) at home, over 20% higher than their road winning percentage over that same span (.455).
