SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara freshman Rodney Boone was named Big West Conference co-Pitcher of the Week after his outstanding start in the season finale on Saturday gave the Gauchos their first Big West Conference baseball championship since 1986.
With UCSB leading Cal Poly by just one game in the standings and having lost consecutive games to the Mustangs, Boone took the mound for the winner-take-all regular season final game, the victor would receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The lefty from Orange, Calif., was sterling, striking out a career-high 12 while allowing just five singles and three walks over 8.1 innings of a 7-0 victory.
The win by Boone improved his record to 8-0 on thre season.
Boone shared the award with Isaiah Nuñez of Cal State Northridge who tossed a complete game 1-0 shutout against Cal State Fullerton.
UCSB will open play in an NCAA Regional at Stanford on Friday, May 31 with a 7:00 p.m. game against Fresno State.
