Chris Malec returns for his fourth year as UCSB's starting second baseman... He enters the 2005 season with 131 career RBI, 11th most in UCSB history.
Malec was selected First Team All-Big West following the 2004 season... The junior had an impressive season batting .306 and knocking in 54 RBI. Was tied for third on the team with 11 doubles... Was a blazing 26-35 (.743) with runners on third and less than two outs...Compiled a team high 14 multi-RBI games, including a five RBI game against Fresno State on February 28. Belted four home runs on the season, including a grand slam off of Long Beach State ace Jered Weaver in the top of the eighth inning to tie the score at 4-4, in what ultimately became an 8-4 Gaucho win... In UCSB's three-game sweep of then fifth-ranked Long Beach, Malec was 5-of-15 (.333), with five RBI, and three runs scored...He had 20 multi-hit games on the season, including five games with a season-high three hits...In a five game series against Cornell, Malec went 11-of-18 (.611), with ten runs scored, and ten RBI...At one point, he hit in seven consecutive Big West games against Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, and Cal State Northridge, going 13-of-33 (.392).
Slugging second baseman limited to just 35 games because of a knee injury...Drove in 17 RBI and knocked two home runs...Hit .615 (eight RBI) with runners on third and less than two outs...Finished season hitting .360 (9-for-25) in last six games while driving in seven RBI and scoring six runs.
Had an excellent season for a true freshman... Batted .328 with 17 doubles and eight homeruns... Led team last year with 60 RBI...Awarded All-Big West second team and honorable mention Freshman All-American honors.
Hit .280 with two home runs and 14 RBI for Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod Baseball League in the summer of 2003...Went 2-for-3 in league's All-Star game...Was honored as Player of the Week on June 30.
