Baseball Overwhelmed 23-10 At San Jose State In Third Game Of Series
Feb. 4, 2001
San Jose, Calif. - Host San Jose State (3-1) buried UCSB (1-2) in the third game of the teams' series Sunday. The Spartans used a nine-run third inning to erase an 8-2 Gaucho lead and never looked back.
The UCSB offense was led by junior transfer Jed Stringham (Utah Valley State College), making his first start as a Gaucho in left field, who clubbed two home runs in a 3-for-4, five-RBI effort. Senior shortstop Jeff Bannon also went 4-for-4 on the day, while senior third baseman Dave Molidor contributed three singles, his third multi-hit game of the series.
Junior Jim Bullard made the start and took the loss for UCSB after being knocked out after just 2.2 innings, having surrendered ten Spartan runs on eight hits. The Gauchos then used five relievers, with freshman Matt Vasquez performing most effectively, allowing two hits and one unearned run in the eighth.
Five UCSB errors and a 24-for-47 day by San Jose State hitters also contributed to the Gaucho loss.
UCSB will play its home opener Saturday, February 10 when it hosts Oregon State (0-3) in an 11:00 a.m. doubleheader.
