Gauchos Win Season Opener At San Diego State
Feb. 7, 2004
The UC Santa Barbara baseball team defeated San Diego State 8-2 in its season opener Friday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The win marks the second time in as many years that the Gauchos have upended the Aztecs on opening day.
Sophomore right-hander Steve Morlock paced the Gauchos on the mound with a solid five inning performance in which he allowed five hits and two runs. Morlock (1-0) struck out seven Aztec batters before giving way to senior right-hander Rich Sorenson.
Sorenson pitched a perfect three innings and senior closer Aaron Jones shut the door with a scoreless ninth.
Gaucho catcher Taylor Vogt put the Gauchos on the board in the second inning with a solo home run off San Diego State starter Scott Shoemaker. Vogt also homered in UCSB's season opener last year.
The Aztecs put up a run in their half of the second but UCSB scored again in the third on a sacrifice fly by junior second baseman Chris Malec and would never give up the lead again.
Nine different Gauchos collected hits in the the three hour, fourteen minute affair and Emerick, along with sophomore first baseman Bill Rowe, both picked up two RBI.
Morlock, Sorenson and Jones combined to retire 14 of the last 15 Aztec batters to finish the game as San Diego State could not muster a hit after the fifth inning.
The Gauchos and Aztecs continue their three-game series at 1 p.m. Saturday at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
