Baseball Defeats Santa Clara 6-1 To Take The Series Two Games To One
Feb. 10, 2002
After struggling in his last start Matt Vasquez (1-1) was looking to give the UCSB baseball team (4-3) some quality innings.
The sophomore from Santa Barbara gave the Gauchos a dominant performance, shutting out Santa Clara (3-3) through seven innings until they scored an unearned run in the eighth, to earn his first win of the year. Matt Moran threw a shutout ninth inning to close the game.
Offensively, the Gauchos were led by Josh McCanne, who had went 3-for-4 for the second day in a row. The junior from Mammoth, Calif., was on fire this whole weekend going 8-for-11 in the series.
John Redmond (1-1) was the hard luck loser for the Broncos. Redmond also gave up only one run, unearned, in 6.2 innnings of work.
Both pitchers were engaged in a shutout through five innings until the Gauchos got on board in the sixth, when Ryan Spilborghs scored on a throwing error by the shortstop on Nate Suttons grounder.
The Gauchos scored at least one run in the final four innings of the game to win 6-1.
UCSB has now won three of their last four games.
The Gauchos return to action this Tuesday, February 12, when they travel south to take on Cal State Northridge for a non-confernce game. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
