Final Stats

FRESNO, Calif. - On a blustery afternoon in Fresno, sophomore starter Michael Martin picked up his first win of the season for UC Santa Barbara, going the distance as the Gauchos topped Fresno State 5-3. Seniors Chris Malec and Matt Wilkerson led UCSB's offensive attack with two RBI apiece.

Fresno State scored the first run in the game after David Gomez led off the second inning with a double, his fourth of the year. The Bulldogs went to a little small ball, as Nick Moresi laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Gomez to third, and a grounder from Christian Vitters gave Gomez the run after a close play at the plate.

UCSB answered back in the third, scoring two runs off of Fresno State starter Matt Garza. The Gauchos placed runners on first and second, and after a wild pitch to advance the pair a base apiece, Matt Wilkerson hit a two-run single to give UCSB the lead. Those were the only runs that Garza would surrender, in what was his best start of the season, going 5.0 innings while striking out six Gaucho batters and giving up just those two runs.

The Bulldogs answered back in the fourth to tie the ballgame back up at two, manufacturing another run with groundouts and a Nick Moresi single after freshman Steve Susdorf hit a leadoff single, one of his two hits for the game. Susdorf would finish the day hitting 2-3 with a walk and two runs scored.

After getting the first two outs in the sixth, Brandon Miller walked junior right fielder Matt Stevens and got senior center fielder Matt Emerick to hit a flyball to left, but Susdorf misplayed the ball and UCSB went on to have a big inning. The next batter third baseman David Figoni would single to left field and drive in Stevens. Figoni would take second on a passed ball. Malec made the Bulldogs pay for their two out error by hitting a single, driving in both Emerick and Figoni. Those runs proved to be enough as UCSB held of Fresno State for the second day in a row.

Michael Martin had his best outing of the 2005 season, picking up the win in a complete game. Aside from pitching the full nine, Martin allowed three runs while striking out four, giving up six hits and walking just one Fresno batter.

Fresno State and UCSB close out their series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m., in the third game at Beiden Field. Two rightie's will face off against each other, as Santa Barbara's Andy Graham (2-0,, 1.50 ERA) takes on Fresno State's Doug Fister (0-1, 5.23 ERA).
