Santa Barbara, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara (4-4) topped guest and cross-town rival Westmont (6-6) Wednesday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium, 8-3. A three-run Gaucho third broke a 1-1 tie and head coach Bob Brontsema's team never looked back, as it cruised to the mid-week victory.
The Gaucho offense was led once again by senior third baseman Dave Molidor. The Santa Rosa native posted his seventh multi-hit game in eight starts, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs, including his first home run of the year, a right-centerfield shot.
The remaining members of the UCSB infield (Jeff Bannon, Chad Peshke, Tyler Von Schell) all had two hits apiece, as did designated hitter Mike Kolbach. Ryan Eisele led Westmont with two hits and an RBI.
Senior righthander Jamie Gonzales (0-0) made the start and tossed the first two innings for UCSB, allowing one earned run on two Westmont hits. He was relieved by freshman Matt Vasquez (1-1), who surrendered two runs (one earned) on four Warrior hits in four innings of work to earn his first win of the season. Vasquez also struck out four. The Gauchos sixth pitcher of the day, Jared Schumaker came on to fan two in a perfect ninth inning. Westmont starter Derek Moore (0-1) took the loss for Westmont.
UCSB will be in action this weekend, as it travels to Los Angeles to take on Loyola Marymount in a three-game series.
