Baseball Topples Loyola Marymount 10-4 Friday, Remaining Games Rained Out
Feb. 23, 2001
Los Angeles - UC Santa Barbara (5-4) used a very strong performance by senior lefthander Rylie Ogle (2-1) to beat host Loyola Marymount (9-6) 10-4 Friday afternoon.
Ogle, behind a five-run Gaucho first inning paced by a three-run Tyler Von Schell homer, shut down the Lions in his finest outing as a Gaucho. The Seal Beach, California native, in his second year at UCSB after transferring from Long Beach City College, went eight innings, giving up only two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out five men en route to his second win of the young season.
The Gauchos extended their lead to 10-2 in the seventh after getting solo homers from Chad Peshke and Jed Stringham. Leadoff man Jared Schumaker, who transferred from LMU a year ago, and Jeff Bannon each had three hits for UCSB, while Von Schell, Stringham and Donovan Warrecker each had a pair.
Junior lefty Justin Angevine pitched the ninth for the Gauchos, allowing two runs on three hits. Loyola Marymount starter C.J. Wilson (0-3) took the loss.
Due to rain, the teams' Saturday and Sunday games were canceled. One makeup game is possible for either Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.
