March 1, 2002

Santa Barbara, Calif. - Despite home runs from Dave Licht and Ryan Spilborghs, the Gaucho baseball team could not muster up anymore offense, losing to Pepperdine by a score of 8-4 at Caesar Uyeska Stadium.

Brandon Boesch (3-1), pitched six innings for the Waves, holding the Gauchos to four runs while striking out three to pick up his third win on the year. Jason Durbin led Pepperdine offensively going 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI.

James Dayley (1-1), lost for the first time as a Gaucho giving up seven runs in five and two-thirds innings pitched while striking out six. Andy Campanella went 3-for-5 with a run scored for UCSB.

UCSB falls to 9-8 on the season, while Pepperdine improves to 9-10.

The Waves jumped all over Dayley early in the game, scoring four runs in the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead. The inning was highlighted by Jason Durbin's first home run ever for Pepperdine, a three-run shot into the netting in left field.

Pepperdine scored another run in the fourth to lead 5-0.

The Gauchos responded in the bottom of the inning when Ryan Spilborghs smacked his fifth homer of the year on the first pitch of the inning, a towering one-run blast over the fence in the left center alley to make it 5-1.

After another Waves run in the top of the fifth, the Gauchos responded with two more runs in the bottom of the inning, on RBI's by Matt Wilkerson and Chris Malec, to cut the Pepperdine lead to 6-3.

Dayley would surrender one more run in the sixth before getting relieved by Sean Thompson, who came in and pitched shut out ball for 1 and two-thirds innings.

Down 7-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Dave Licht nailed his second homer of the year, a one-run shot over the right field fence to make it 7-4.

After Lichts blast, the Gauchos could not come up with anymore runs and ultimately fell 8-4.

UCSB and Pepperdine will resume play tomorrow in Malibu, at 1:00 p.m. for the second game in a three-game set. Game three will be back at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium, in Santa Babara, on Sunday.
