Baseball Beats Westmont
March 2, 2000
Montecito, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos took out some aggression when they visited Westmont College. The Gauchos defeated the Warriors 16-0 in a midweek nonconference game. The Gauchos improve their record to 8-7, while Westmont falls to 7-6.
The potent Gaucho offense took it to the Westmont pitching staff early and often. They managed to put one run on the board in the first, six in the second, eight in the fourth, and one more for good measure in the fifth. Every Gaucho starter had a hit, and seven of them had a multi-hit game, as the offense managed a total of 18 hits on the day.
Although the offense was the story of the game, the Gaucho coaching staff has to be elated at the pitching performance from redshirt freshman, Jim Bullard, and the relief performance from senior Jason Cooley. Bullard went seven strong innings, allowing just five Westmont hits while striking out five and not allowing a walk. Cooley finished out the shutout with two innings and two strikeouts and no hits or walks.
With the win, Bullard earns his first decision with a 1-0 record, while Westmont starter Justin Egerer earned the loss and goes to 0-1.
The Gauchos have the upcoming weekend off, but host Cal Lutheran on Monday and PAC 10 powerhouse, USC on Tuesday. Both games are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
