UCSB Unable to Overcome Lobo Rally, Falls to New Mexico 6-3 in Series Finale
March 7, 2004
New Mexico sophomore second baseman Ryan Barba blasted a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel the Lobos to a 6-3 win over UC Santa Barbara Sunday afternoon at Isotopes Park. It marks the first win for UNM in its new facility.
With the game tied at 2-2 and the bases loaded with two outs, the Gauchos (10-6) sent in reliever Alex McRobbie to halt the Lobo rally in the eighth. Barba had other ideas. He nailed McRobbie's first offering over the left-field wall for his first career homer, giving the Lobos the 6-2 lead. Barba, who also had a run-scoring single in the fifth, tied a career high with five RBI in the game.
Earlier in the inning, A.J. Spitaleri drove in Josh Mader on an infield single, knotting the game at 2.
Junior transfer Cooper Eddy (West Des Moines, Iowa/Tennessee Tech) earned his first win at UNM, firing a seven-hit complete game. Eddy (1-2) got stronger as the game went along, giving up only one hit in the last three innings. He struck out a season-high eight batters and walked just one.
Gaucho catcher Taylor Vogt pounded his team-high fifth home run of the year in the ninth and extended his season-high hit streak to eight games with a 2-for-4 day at the plate. It was his sixth multi-hit game of the season.
Senior outfielder Brian Adams launched his first roundtripper of the year in UCSB's two-run third. He finished 1-for-3.
Spitaleri, Mader and Sean Murray each collected two hits for UNM (2-9-1).
Ivan Ramirez (0-1) threw 1.1 innings in the loss for UCSB.
