Los Angeles, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara baseball team carried the momemtum from Friday's extra inning victory into Saturday's contest, defeating Loyola Marymount, 14-8. The Gaucho hitters rocked LMU starting pitcher Josh Muecke for eight runs, including a grand slam by outfielder Matt Wilkerson and a solo home run by catcher Chad Ziemendorf.
Eric Posthumus (1-2) picked up his first win of the season allowing four runs and striking out three in five innings of work. Muecke (1-1) was credited with the loss for Loyola Marymount.
LMU wasted no time, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Back-to-back hits to start the game put two runners in scoring position with no outs. Those runs would come home after a wild pitch and a balk by UCSB starter Eric Posthumus. The Lions added another run on an RBI triple by second baseman Sean Smith, making the score, 3-0.
The Lions three-run lead did not last for long as Wilkerson and Ziemendorf would both homer in the top of the thrid inning. Josh Fulton singled, Gabe Mann reached on an error and Nate Sutton walked to load the bases for the right-handed hitting Wilkerson. On a 3-1 count, Wilkerson blasted a Josh Muecke fastball over the 365 ft. sign in left-center field, giving the Gauchos the lead, 4-3. With two outs, Ziemendorf added a towering solo home run that cleared the 37 ft. wall in left field.
After being retired in order in the fourth inning, UCSB would rally in the top of the fifth. Sutton, Wilkerson, and Rodriguez all reached base safely to load the bases again for UCSB. Relief pitcher Stephen Kahn hit Ziemendorf forcing in Sutton from thrid base. First baseman Bill Rowe then delivered a two run double down the left field. Ziemendorf later scored on an infield single by Gabe Mann, increasing the Gauchos lead, 9-4.
The Lions would score four more runs in the game, but UCSB would counter with five of their own, as they defeated LMU, 14-8.
The win improves the Gauchos record to 11-9, the loss drops the Lions to 9-7. The victory also gives the Gauchos their third consecutive series win.
Matt Wilkerson led the Gaucho's offensive attack going 3-for-6 with four RBI.
UC Santa Barbara has pounded out 30 hits and 20 runs in the first two games of this three-game series. Sutton is 6-for-10 with two runs and one RBI in the series. Rowe has gone 5-for-9 with 3 RBI and two doubles.
The Gauchos conclude their three-game series with Loyola Marymount at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. UCSB returns to Caesar Uyesaka Stadium next weekend against UC Riverside, before heading to Corvallis, OR during spring break for a three-game series with the Beavers of Oregon State.
