Berkeley, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara (9-4) used a season-best performance by junior righty James Garcia (3-1) and seven runs in the last two innings to top host Cal (10-8) by a 9-2 count.
UCSB, down 1-0 in the third, took a 2-1 lead when Jared Schumaker singled to center, scoring Donovan Warrecker and Andy Campanella. The runs were the last either team would score until the eighth, when Chad Peshke locked up the game for the Gauchos on a bases loaded single.
Garcia, making his fifth start of the season, struggled early, walking seven men total. However, the transfer from El Camino Junior College gave up only seven hits while striking out seven Bears. He allowed two earned runs, one coming on a Cal solo home run in the ninth.
Three runs in the eighth, sparked by Peshke's single, followed by four more in the ninth put the game out of Bear reach. Both Kolbach and Dave Molidor had three hits for the Gauchos, with Molidor adding three RBI as well. Peshke also had a pair of hits.
The win was UCSB's sixth straight, and eighth in its last nine games. The teams will play tomorrow and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
