Gonzaga held UC Santa Barbara to a season low four hits in defeating the Gauchos 8-4 in the second day of action at the Johnny Quik Classic at Beiden Field in Fresno.
The Gauchos fall to 11-11 on the season and 0-2 at the Johnny Quik Classic, while the Bulldogs improve to 9-9 on the season and 1-1 in the tourney.
Jared Edrosolan (0-1) takes the loss for the Gauchos giving up the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. Starter Matt Vasquez went six innings giving up four runs, one earned, scattering three hits, walking four while striking out five. Mike Sutherland also came in for relief, giving up three runs in the eighth inning.
Greg Brooks gets the win for Gonzaga in relief of starter Kemp Quackenbush, who gave up three run on five hits, in five innings of work.
The Gauchos took a quick 1-0 lead in the second on a lead-off homer drilled over the right center fence by Malec, for his sixth blast of the year.
However, the Bulldogs came right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on a Brian Munhall homer to take a 3-1 lead.
UCSB regained the lead 4-3, after scoring a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
Gonzaga tied the game on another homer, this time by Garth Blumberg in the sixth and then took the lead in the seventh by scoring another run. The Bulldogs would go on to score three more runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Malec ended the day 2-for 4 for the Gauchos and Ryan Spilborghs went 1-for-3 with a walk, run scored and two RBI.
The Gauchos will finish off their pool-play tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Beiden field against host Fresno State.
