March 12, 2005
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
Senior right fielder Matt Wilkerson blasts his third home run of the season and senior third baseman David Figoni increases his hitting streak to 15 games as the UC Santa Barbara baseball team (9-11) falls to Loyola Marymount (5-10) 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. Freshman designated hitter Matt Aidem continued his hot hitting going 2-for-4 in Saturday's affair.
The Gauchos struck first as Wilkerson launched his third round-tripper of the year in the bottom of the fourth inning. With his fourth inning home run, Wilkerson climbed the ladder to no. 4 all-time in UCSB career homers with 32. Wilkerson needs just nine more to become the all-time Gaucho home run leader.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Lions struck back and took the lead for good putting up four runs. LMU got on the board as pinch hitter Matt White singled up the middle with the bases loaded, driving in two runners. The Lions then extended their 2-1 lead as center fielder Joe Frazee came up big with his clutch two RBI single to center field.
Santa Barbara cut LMU's lead in half in the bottom of the eighth inning as Wilkerson drove in his second RBI of the afternoon with a base hit to left center field. So far this season, Wilkerson leads the Gauchos with 23 RBI.
Although he picked up the loss, junior starting pitcher Steve Morlock (1-4) looked very impressive. He tossed 6.1 innings giving up only one hit and two earned runs.
Senior third baseman David Figoni extended his hitting streak to 15 straight games with his third inning double to left center field. Figoni would end the night going 2-for-3 with one walk and one run scored.
Freshman designated hitter Matt Aidem continued to swing a hot bat as he added two more singles in Saturday's game. In the series against LMU, Aidem is a blazing 7-for-9 (.778) with six RBI. All seven of his hits are singles.
LMU starter Brad Myers (3-2) won his third game of the season, pitching 7.0 innings allowing one earned run off seven hits. Reliever Blake Feaser earned his first save with an appearance in the ninth inning.
The series continues Sunday as UCSB faces off against LMU for the final time this season. The rubber match is slated to begin at 1:00 pm at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. Sophomore Andy Graham (2-1) will get the nod in tomorrow's series finale.
