Santa Barbara, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara (10-6) couldn't keep pace with tenth-ranked USC (13-8), losing 12-5 at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium Tuesday.
The Gauchos found themselves down 11-0 going into their half of the sixth. In that inning, UCSB put together five of its nine hits to score four runs. Chad Peshke led off the stanza with a single, advancing to second on a Tyler Von Schell single two batters later. Ryan Spilborghs then added a single to right, scoring Peshke. Spilborghs and Von Schell came in on a double to center by Donovan Warrecker. Finally, Andy Campanella's single up the middle scored Warrecker.
UCSB starter Jamie Gonzales (0-1) was chased after three innings of work, giving up six earned runs on seven Trojan hits. Matt Moran came on to allow four runs, two earned, over the next two innings. Justin Angevine, in his fourth appearance of the season, held USC to one unearned run on two hits, also in two innings. Keith Kelley, making his UCSB debut, gave up a solo home run to USC's Anthony Lunetta, his third in as many games. Russell Wirth finished the game for the Gauchos.
Both Peshke and Spilborghs had two hits on the day for the Gauchos, while Warrecker had two RBI.
UCSB will return to action Thursday and again Friday, when it hosts Temple in two 2:00 p.m. contests.
