Fresno, Calif. - The Gauchos week in Fresno has been a long one.
It just got even longer, as Liberty rallied from a 8-7 defecit, scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth, to hand UCSB their fifth consecutive loss, in a 9-8 defeat at the Pepsi/Jonny Quik Classic at Beiden Field in Fresno.
The Gauchos now fall to 11-14 on the season and Flames improve to 10-5-1.
The loss put a damper on UCSB's rally in the top of the ninth.
Down 7-4, the Gauchos scored four runs in the top of the inning, highlighted by Nate Suttons first extra-baseb hit of the season, a three-run blast over the right field fence to give UCSB what seemed a game winning 8-7 lead.
However, in the bottom of the ninth closer Matt Moran (1-1) could not hold the Gaucho lead, giving up the two runs to keep UCSB winless at the week long tourney.
Alex Dooley (2-2) picks up the win in relief, despite giving up the four runs in the ninth.
Gaucho starter Rich Sorenson gave up six runs on ten hits, in six and two-thirds innings worth of work.
Sutton finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBI. The homer was Suttons first extra-base hit in 88 at-bats this season. Blair Havens and Chad Ziemendorf also swung the bat well for the Gauchos with Havens continuing his hot hitting, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Ziemendorf breaking out with a 3-for-4 performance.
The Gauchos will have one last opportunity to win at the Classic, as they will play the loser of the Illinois State-Fordham game tommorrow, Saturday March 16. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
