Santa Barbara, Calif. - UC Riverside used a seven run eighth inning to put the game out of reach, defeating UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, 10-3. The Highlanders pounded out 17 hits, including seven in the eighth inning in route to their eighteenth victory of the season.
Jaymie Torres (4-0) earned the victory of UCR allowing two runs in eight innings of work. Junior Matt Vasquez (2-2) was credited with the loss.
Riverside put the game out of reach scoring seven runs off of three Gaucho pitchers. With one out in the top of the eighth inning, the Highlanders barraged UCSB pitching with three straight hits, including a run scoring double by Ryan Harvey to increase their lead to 4-2. With two runners in scoring position, Tony Festa doubled in Harvey and Brian Wahlbrink expanding the UCR lead. The Highlanders would add four more in the inning.
UCSB took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Second baseman Matt Stevens walked to leadoff the game. After advancing to second base on a ground ball, Taylor Vogt scorched a single up the middle, plating Stevens.
UCR erased the early Gaucho lead scoring three runs in the top of the third inning. The Highlanders used RBI singles by Festa and Randy Blood to give them a 3-1 lead.
The Gauchos cut UC Riverside's lead to one in the bottom of the sixth inning. Josh Fulton led off with a single and found himself on third with one out after a stolen base, and a passed ball. Nate Sutton then bounced out to the shortstop, allowing Fulton to score from third.
UCSB added a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but could not spark a rally. The loss drops UC Santa Barbara to 12-11 on the season.
The Gauchos travel to Oregon next weekend for a three-game series with the Beavers of Oregon State.
