Sacramento, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos opened Big West competition on Friday as they traveled north to take on the Sacramento State Hornets. The Gauchos took game one of the three game series 2-0, to go 11-10 on the season and 1-0 in conference. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 6-13, 0-1.
Rylie Ogle started the game for the Gauchos, but in the second inning, came up lame with a muscle soreness. Troy Kinto came in relief, and pitched the remaining seven innings, allowing four hits, walking two and striking out two. This stellar performance earned Kinto the win, and is now 2-1 on the season. Chad Elliott pitched well for the Hornets. He went the distance but allowed the two Gaucho runs and did not get run support of his own. He falls to 0-3 on the season.
In the ninth inning for the Gauchos, Donovan Warrecker drew a one out walk. A single by Jon Stephens advanced Warrecker to second. The big hit of the inning came off the bat of R.J. Smith who lined a double down the left field line to score both Warrecker and Stephens. This was all the scoring that the Gauchos would need.
Jeff Carter led the Gaucho offense with three hits and Stephens added two more.
