Baseball Falls To Cal Poly, 8-1

March 24, 2002

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Cal Poly capitalized on a five-run fifth inning to handily defeat UC Santa Barbara, 8-1, in a non-conference baseball game Sunday afternoon in Baggett Stadium.

Tyler Fitch (4-3) threw three scoreless innings to get the win and Kevin Correia allowed one run and six hits in five innings of work for the Mustangs, who avenged a 11-4 loss at the hands of the Gauchos on March 5. Cal Poly improves to 15-17-1.

Matt Vasquez (4-2) is the hard-luck loser for the Gauchos surrendering one run on three hits in three innings of work. Sean Thompson gave up five runs in three innings pitched in relief. The Gauchos now fall to 12-15 on the season.

Cal Poly scored all of their runs despite no extra-base hits. Right fielder Ryan Spilborghs had the only extra base hit of the game, a triple to center field in the eighth inning.

Spilborghs would go on to score the only run for the Gauchos, when second baseman Chris Malec grounded out to the second baseman, following his triple.

First baseman Josh McCanne and catcher Chad Ziemendorf also had two hits apiece for the Gauchos. Ziemendorf also had a good showing defensively throwing out two base runners on steal attempts.

The Gauchos will host Westmont College (4-19-1) on Tuesday before beginning Big West Conference play against Cal State Northridge Thursday, March 28. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
