Corvallis, Oreg. - The UC Santa Barbara baseball team split a double header against Oregon State Sunday in Corvallis, Oregon.
The Gauchos jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first game of the doubleheader. Matt Stevens set the tone, doubling to lead off the game. He then scored on an RBI single to right field by third baseman Nate Sutton. UCSB struck again as Bill Rowe singled up the middle to score Taylor Vogt from third. The Gauchos loaded the bases after back-to-back singles by Chad Ziemendorf and Brian Adams. With two outs center fielder Matt Emerick singled, plating Ziemendorf and Rowe.
OSU chipped away at UCSB's four run lead, scoring one run in the bottom of the third inning. Jacoby Ellsbury and Seth Pietsch singled to start the inning. After advancing to third on a ground ball, Ellsbury scored the Beavers first run on a sacrifice fly by Andy Jarvis.
The Gauchos added another run on an RBI single by Matt Stevens in the top of the eighth inning.
Pinch hitter Chris Biles walked to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning. Jarvis and Tony Calderon then smacked back-to-back doubles down the right field line, to make the score 5-3.
Steve Morlock gave up another Beaver run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but then induced a double play with one out to end the game.
Sean Thompson earned his third victory in as many starts allowing only one run in six innings of work. Beaver starting pitcher Jon Koller was credited with the loss allowing four earned runs before his early exit in the third inning. Morlock earned his fourth save of the season.
UCSB took a one run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Beavers scored two runs on two hits in come back fashion to earn the victory. Levi Weber tripled to drive in the tying run of the game. After issuing a walk to Kerisi Reynolds, closer Steve Morlock was relieved by lefty Ivan Ramirez. With two outs, Ramirez hit the next two batters forcing Weber in from third base and giving OSU the victory.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Beavers scored two runs, jumping out to an early lead.
The Gauchos did not wait long to catch up, tying the contest, 2-2, in the top of the fifth inning. UCSB loaded the bases despite two quick outs to begin the inning. Third baseman Nate Sutton then delivered a two out single to right field, plating Mann and Ziemendorf.
Andy Baldwin earned the victory for OSU, Morlock was credited with the loss.
Nate Sutton led the offensive attack for UCSB going 3-for-5 with 3 RBI. In two games, Sutton is batting 5-for-10 with four RBI.
UCSB concludes this non-conference three-game series with OSU at 12:00 noon on Monday at Coleman Field in Corvallis, OR. The Gauchos then return home for a three-series against Big West foe Cal State Northridge.
