CORVALLIS, Ore. - The UC Santa Barbara baseball team was the first team this season to score against Oregon State starting pitcher Sam Gaviglio, who carried a 38.2 consecutive scoreless inning streak into Friday night's game.
However, while the Gauchos pushed two runs across against the Beavers' right-hander, No. 23 OSU scored more and opened the three-game series with a 6-3 win at Goss Stadium.
The Beavers scored four runs against UCSB's ace, Jesse Meaux, knocking him out in the fifth inning and the feel-good vibe about ending Gaviglio's streak ended there.
UCSB, 10-7 overall, scored the first earned run this season vs. the junior righty on Ryan Palermo's deep sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. The Gauchos had runners on in the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings vs. Gaviglio but were unable to scratch out more than the two runs.
Gaviglio, who took a perfect game into the eighth inning in his previous start vs. Long Beach State allowed a season-high tying six hits, but he also struck out 11 batters.
UCSB scored in the sixth when Williams singled and later scored on Trevor Whyte's base hit.
But OSU (17-5) scored once in the fourth and then three times in the fifth, chasing Meaux. It was the senior's shortest start since May 2, 2010 vs. UC Riverside. Meaux allowed four runs in six hits, walking three and striking out one in 4.2 innings.
Oregon State scored a run in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 6-2 lead.
Brett Fick, who spent all of last season as an infielder, made his collegiate pitching debut, pitching to two batters in the eighth inning. He recorded an out and walked a batter and now can add depth out of the bullpen.
