CORVALLIS, Ore. - No. 23 Oregon State scored multiple runs in four of the first five innings and ran away with an 11-5 victory over the UC Santa Barbara baseball team on Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium.
Matt Vedo, making his first start since coming one out away from throwing a no-hitter last Saturday, only lasted four outs on Saturday as OSU scored six runs on five hits against the junior right-hander.
Vedo took the loss, falling to 3-3 on the year as the Beavers scored four runs in the first inning.
When the Gauchos came back and scored twice in the second inning to cut the lead to 4-2, OSU rallied back with two more runs against Vedo and then scored twice more in the third inning vs. reliever Zak Edginton to put the game away.
UCSB falls to 10-8 overall. Oregon State, which is 11-1 at home, improves to 18-5 on the season.
Senior infielder Beck Wheeler made his collegiate pitching debut, pitching the sixth inning, striking out a batter.
Utility man Brett Fick, who made his UCSB debut on the mound on Friday night, was the first Gaucho pitcher to retire the side in order when he did so in the seventh.
The Gauchos scored three times in the eighth inning, two coming home on Whyte's double.
