Baseball Edges Hawaii 7-6 In 11 Innings To Take Verizon Rainbow Easter Tournament Title

Honolulu, Hawaii - UC Santa Barbara (21-8) defeated tournament host Hawaii (16-18) 7-6 in 11 innings to win the Verizon Rainbow Easter Tournament Sunday night.
The Gauchos, who scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-1 lead, surrendered five unearned runs in the Hawaii ninth to send the game to extra innings. UCSB loaded the bases in the sixth before Tyler Von Schell brought Mike Kolbach home with a sacrifice fly. Chad Peshke came home on a wild pitch and Jeff Bannon scored on a Jed Stringham double to center before Donovan Warrecker singled home Stringham.
UCSB took a 1-0 lead in the second and a 6-1 advantage in the sixth on Tyler Von Schell's 11th and 12th home runs of the season. With the game tied at 6 in the bottom of the 11th, Ryan Spilborghs led off the frame with a double down the right field line. He went to first on a Jared Schumaker bunt, and scored when Dave Molidor grounded to the shortstop with the bases loaded and beat the second baseman's throw to first on a double play attempt.
James Garcia (4-1) started for the Gauchos, and surrendered five runs, one earned, on ten Hawaii hits in 8.2 innings. Jamie Gonzales faced two batters in the ninth before Jeremy Sugarman (2-1) came on to record the final seven outs of the game en route to his second win of the tournament and the Gauchos' ninth victory in their last ten outings.
Every member of the Gaucho starting lineup had at least one hit, with Kolbach leading the way with three baseknocks. Schumaker, Peshke, Von Schell, Stringham and Jeff Bannon added two hits apiece.
UCSB will play at Westmont Wednesday, April 4 at 2:00 p.m.
