IRVINE, Calif. - The Gaucho offense could not get their bats going as they were held to six hits while striking out 14 times in a 4-3 Big West Conference game loss to UC Irvine Friday evening at Anteater Ballpark.
Starter Matt Vasquez (Santa Barbara, Calif.) takes the loss for the Gauchos, who fall to 14-17 overall and 1-2 in Big West play. Vasquez went seven innings, giving up 11 hits on four runs, two earned, while striking out five.
Irvine starter Sean Tracey went six innings giving up three runs on five hits while striking out nine to help the Anteaters improve to 20-15 overall and 3-1 in Big West play.
Irvine got on the scoreboard in the first when a fielding error prolonged the inning allowing the Anteaters to score two unearned runs off Vasquez.
Tracey held held the Gaucho batters in check, not allowing a hit until the third inning and being unscored upon till the fifth inning.
In the fifth, the Gauchos worked the bases loaded, which allowed center fielder, Andy Campanella, to single to left scoring designated hitter Matt Wilkerson (Trabuco Hills, Calif) and third baseman Nate Sutton (Santa Cruz, Calif.) making it a 3-2 Irvine lead.
Irvine came right back in the bottom of the fifth as the Anteaters got three singles in four pitches, scoring one run to bring their lead back up to 4-2.
The Gauchos went right back to work on Tracy in the sixth, with second baseman Chris Malec (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) reaching base on a hard hit single that the first baseman could not snare to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Wilkerson's single to left was misplayed by the left fielder and Malec would come around to score to make it a 4-3 game.
Vasquez ran into trouble again in the sixth with two base runners reaching on an error and hit-by-pitch. But the sophomore rebounded by striking out the side to end the inning unscathed.
Vasquez continued his newfound dominance over the Irvine batters in the seventh, with a strikout sandwiched between two ground outs to Vasquez himself.
Things looked good for UCSB in the eighth, when shortstop Dave Licht (Huntington Beach, Calif.) doubled down the left field line to start the inning followed by a walk to right fielders Ryan Spilborghs to put runners on first and second with no outs. However, the Gauchos failed to score as Malec failed to get down a bunt and eventually flied out and Irvine closer Jon Koller struck out first baseman Josh McCanne (Mammoth, Calif.) and Wilkerson to get out of the eighth, still clinging to a 4-3 lead.
Kevin Miller (Long Beach, Calif.) came in to relieve Vasquez in the eighth and retired the side. In the inning Miller pitched to his fraternal twin, Chris, the catcher for Irvine, inducing him into a ground out to second.
Koller pitched a scoreless ninth to end the game.
Andy Campanella led the Gaucho offense with a 2-for-4 performance to go with his two RBI.
Right fielder Chris Klemm went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Anteaters.
