Box Score

Santa Barbara, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara kept its hot streak hot, as the Gauchos beat UC Riverside 14-4 to complete a home sweep of the Highlanders (12-21), win their 13th out of their last 14 games, and improve to 25-8, the school's best start since 1984.

A strong performance by sophomore lefthander Jim Bullard limited the UC Riverside offense, allowing the Gaucho bats to swing freely. The West Covina native had his best outing of the season, holding the Highlanders to one run on three hits over six innings. Bullard also fanned four men and walked only two, to improve his record to 5-2 on the year.

The lone Highlander run off Bullard came in the first, but was quickly answered when Dave Molidor hit a two-run homer down the right field line in the Gaucho half of the inning. UCSB struck again in the second, when Jed Stringham hit a two-run homer to right center.

The four runs were the first of nine unanswered scores recorded by the Gauchos. UC Riverside managed three runs in the top of the seventh off Gaucho reliever Matt Moran, but the UCSB offense quickly erased any thought of a UCR comeback when it hung a five-spot in the bottom half.

Jimmy Walker led off the inning with a single to right, followed by an Andy Campanella single to center and a Jared Schumaker walk to load the bases. Ryan Spilborghs then struck out on a foul tip before Chad Peshke walked to score Walker and keep the bases full. Dave Molidor grounded to the shortstop, reaching on a fielder's choice as Campanella scored and Schumaker was thrown out at third. With two men on, Tyler Von Schell then connected on a homer to left to cap the scoring. The long ball was Von Schell's 14th of the season, just three shy of Greg Vella's school record set in 1986.

Moran stayed in the game to pitch a scoreless eighth before giving way to Jamie Gonzales who gave up two hits but struck out two men in a scoreless ninth.

UCSB will play at USC Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. before opening its Big West Conference season with a three-game series at Cal State Northridge beginning Thursday.
