Riverside, Calif. - For the second straight day, UC Santa Barbara (18-17, 1-4) couldn't handle the starting pitching from UC Riverside (26-9, 3-2). AJ Shappi (7-1) threw a complete game for UCR, the second in as many days for Highlander pitching.
Shappi kept Santa Barbara hitters off balance all day, allowing only seven hits and two runs. The right-hander leads UCR with his seven victories.
The Gauchos once again started off the scoring, jumping to a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Chad Ziemendorf got the first hit of the day for UCSB, dumping a ball into left-center field. Josh Fulton followed up with a smash off the wall in right field for a triple, scoring Ziemendorf. Brian Adams brought Fulton home with a ground-out to second base.
As with Friday's game, the early lead for Santa Barbara would not hold. Riverside came back to score three runs in the bottom of the third. Scott Powis reached on a throwing error by Fulton to open the inning. After a wild pitch and a walk to Brian Wahlbrink, Ryan Harvey doubled to bring Powis in. A sacrifice fly by Tony Festa tied up the score. The Highlanders jumped ahead 3-2 on the second and third wild pitches in the inning by Gaucho starter Steve Morlock, bringing Harvey around.
UCR increased their lead in the fourth inning with a Matt Cunningham two-run homer. Cunningham's fourth shot of the season left the park in a hurry. Left-fielder Nic Rodriguez could only turn and watch as the ball hit the top of the safety netting.
The Highlanders pushed a couple more runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning. Three consecutive hits off of Gaucho reliever Rich Sorenson made the score 7-2 Riverside. After loading the bases, Kevin Mangels delivered a two-out single, scoring two more.
Morlock (3-4) took the loss for the Gauchos. He lasted four innings in his second start of the season. Morlock surrendered four earned runs on four hits. The right-hander walked two and struck out three.
Sunday's game has been moved to 12:00 noon. Originally slated for a 1:00 pm start time, the earlier start it in hopes to beat a possible rainstorm. Santa Barbara will send Ivan Ramirez (2-0, 2.36 ERA) to the mound. Ramirez, a regular in the bullpen, will be making his first start as a Gaucho. UC Riverside will send out Julio Fernandez (2-1, 4.06). The Gauchos head out to face Cal State Fullerton next week for a three game Big West series.
