LONG BEACH, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara baseball team (16-20, 3-5) scored seven runs in the tenth inning with the help of three Long Beach State (22-10, 7-1) errors, en route to a 13-7 Big West Conference win, Saturday evening at Blair Field.
The first nine runners reached base in the tenth, with the Gauchos sending 15 batters to the plate in that inning. The Gauchos were able to score seven runs off three Dirtbag pitchers on only three base hits.
Eric Posthumus (Santa Clarita, Calif.) picks up the win for the Gauchos, pitching the final two and one-thirds innings to improve to 3-1 on the season. Starter Sean Thompson (Redondo Beach, Calif.) pitched seven and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on 11 hits while striking out one.
Josh Alliston takes the loss for Long Beach State and falls to 2-3 on the season. The Gauchos rocked Dirtbag starter Daniel Eistentrager for five runs and 11 hits scoring five runs.
The Gaucho offense pounded out 17 hits overall, with Blair Havens (Los Alamitos, Calif.) leading the way with a 4-for-6 performance. Havens also scored three runs, had two RBI and a double. Chris Malec also had a fine day, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Three Gauchos, Dave Licht (2-for-6, 3B), Taylor Vogt (2-for-6, 2 RBI) and Nate Sutton (2-for-4, 2 runs) had two hits apiece.
Long Beach, who had 16 hits on the day, was led offensively by Paul McAnulty who went 3-for-5 with an RBI.
The Gauchos held on to win despite blowing two leads of 5-1 and 6-5. Thompson held the Dirtbags to one run through seven innings until surrendering five consecutive hits in the eighth inning. Long Beach had six consecutive base hits in the eighth inning scoring four runs to tie the game up.
With the win, the Gauchos avenge a 8-5 defeat a day earlier to Long Beach.
UCSB and LBSU will meet again on Sunday afternoon for the rubber game of the series at Blair Field.
