SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
Senior third baseman David Figoni went 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored as the UC Santa Barbara baseball team (19-18) defeated UCLA (8-24) 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. Junior starting pitcher Steve Morlock (4-5) earned the victory by tossing 6.2 innings and only allowed one run (unearned) while striking out six.
The Gauchos took the early 1-0 lead as senior right fielder Matt Wilkerson tallied his team-leading 36th RBI in bottom of the third inning.
UCLA came back to tie the ball game as it capitalized on a throwing error by senior catcher Matt Kalafatis.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Santa Barbara took a three run lead as freshman Alden Carrithers drew a bases load walk. Then Figoni followed with a two-RBI single to left field.
The Bruins made the affair interesting in the top of the ninth as it rallied for two runs off UCSB closer Alex McRobbie. Pinch hitter Jarrad Page and left fielder Anthony Norman each amassed a RBI.
McRobbie picked-up his ninth save of the season leaving him one shy of tying the UCSB single season record of 10 held by Chris Quiroz. McRobbie is currently tied for second with today's winning pitcher Morlock.
Freshman Scott Cohen, making his first collegiate start at shortstop, recorded his first collegiate base hit as he doubled to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning.
UCLA starting pitcher Brant Rustich picked up the loss although he did not allow an earned run. He hurled 5.2 innings, allowing five hits and four runs (all unearned).
