SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
Senior catcher Matt Kalafatis went 3-for-3 and junior center fielder Matt Emerick went 1-for-3 with a RBI as the UC Santa Barbara baseball team (19-20, 1-3) fell to Cal Poly (25-14, 6-1), 6-1, in a conference match-up on Friday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. Junior relief pitcher Nate Holguin entered the game in the seventh inning and tossed 3.0 innings and only allowed one earned run.
The Gauchos took an early lead, as they posted one run in the bottom of the second inning. Junior first baseman Bill Rowe began the one out rally with a walk and was then moved over to third base as Kalafatis doubled down the right field line. Emerick tallied the lone Gaucho run with his RBI-single to left field.
That was as much offense as Cal Poly starting Garrett Olsen (9-2) would allow. Olson hurled a complete game, allowing only one Santa Barbara run to cross the plate.
RBI's by second baseman Brent Walker, center fielder Brandon Roberts and catcher Kyle Blumenthal allowed the Mustangs to take a 4-1 lead in the to of the third inning.
Cal Poly would add another run of the fourth and a final in the top of the seventh inning.
UCSB junior starting pitcher Michael Martin (4-4) picked-up the loss as he worked 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits and five runs (all earned) while striking out two.
Holguin pitched strong out of the bullpen as he allowed only one run (earned) in 3.0 innings of work.
UCSB and Cal Poly continue the conference series tomorrow at 1:00 pm at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. Sunday's series final is also scheduled for a 1:00 pm first pitch.
