SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - No. 12 Cal Poly erupted for six runs in the sixth inning on Sunday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium and defeated UC Santa Barbara, 15-7, to win the final two games of the weekend series.
The Gauchos (23-14, 6-6 in the Big West) tied the game at 6-6 in the fifth inning only to watch the Mustangs (29-10, 10-5) score a half-dozen runs, all with two outs.
After a hit batter and a walk followed a single to load the bases, Matt Jensen turned an 0-2 count into a walk, forcing in a run. Pinch-hitter Adam Melker then laced a two-run single to center field before the bullpen telephone rang for Patrick McIntyre.
D.J. Gentile greeted McIntyre with a three-run homer and Cal Poly cruised the remainder of the game.
UCSB scored twice in the first inning on Eric Oliver's single and Matt Valaika's sacrifice fly, taking a 2-1 lead. However, the Mustangs scored twice in the third and three times in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead.
John DeAlba started a rally with a one out walk before Shane Carlson singled. Steve Cook, who led the Gauchos with two hits, then hit a two-out, run-scoring single to center to put runners on the corners.
With Gunnar Terhune at the plate, Cook took off for second, but no Cal Poly player covered the base and catcher Justin Hensley's throw skipped into centerfield, scoring Carlson and putting Cook at third. Terhune beat out an infield single and all of a sudden it was 6-5.
Valaika then blasted a solo homer to left in the fifth to tie the game before Cal Poly took control.
