April 27, 2003
Santa Barbara, Calif. - Long Beach State jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, defeating UC Santa Barbara in the rubber game, 9-3. After opening the three-game series with a victory over No. 5 Long Beach State on Friday, the Gauchos dropped the final two games giving LBSU the series.
The 49ers struck for three runs in the top of the second inning, highlighted by RBI singles by Troy Tulowitzki and Tito Cruz.
Cruz reached on a throwing error by Josh Fulton, and Steve Velazco was hit by a pitch with two outs in the top of the sixth inning. Sean Thompson then forced catcher Todd Jennings to pop up in foul territory to the first base side, however Josh McCanne was unable to shield the sun, allowing the ball to drop and giving Jennings a new life. Jennings then sent the next Thompson offering over the left field wall, increasing the 49ers lead, 6-0.
The Gauchos rallied for three runs in the next three innings, but LBSU responded by scoring three of their own, including two runs in the top seventh inning.
LBSU starting pitcher Cesar Ramos (3-4) earned the victory for the 49ers, left-hander Sean Thompson (5-5) was credited with the loss.
The Gauchos travel to face defending Big West Conference champion Cal State Northridge for a three-game series next weekend
