UCSB Shutout by Cal State Bakersfield's Montoya

May 4, 2010

Box Score

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Cal State Bakersfield sophomore left-hander Jonathan Montoya had his best-ever start and unfortunately it came against UC Santa Barbara's baseball team.

Montoya pitched a complete-game shutout with a career-high 10 strikeouts as Cal State Bakersfield defeated UCSB 4-0 on Tuesday at Hardt Field. The Gauchos did have seven hits against Montoya, but didn't get a runner to third base.

UCSB falls to 19-20 overall with its third straight loss. CSUB improves to 19-23.

Gunnar Terhune and Beck Wheeler each had two hits for the Gauchos while Matt Valaika and Steve Moon each doubled for UCSB, but Montoya was surely on top of his game.

Meanwhile, the Gauchos committed a season-high five errors with UCSB starting pitcher Greg Davis committing two errors himself - both in the second inning. CSUB was only able to push across one run that inning despite three total errors by UCSB in the frame.

Davis went four innings, allowing three hits and two runs (one earned) with six strikeouts. However, he falls to 1-2 on the season.

The Gaucho bullpen continued its recent trend of pitching well. Matthew Brady, Connor Whalen and Nick Loredo combined to allow just one earned run in their four combined innings. The UCSB bullpen has allowed just four earned runs in its past 26.1 innings pitched (1.37 ERA).
