May 12, 2000
Santa Barbara, Calif. -
Catcher Dave Lusk belted his third home run of the season leading off the ninth inning and Sacramento State added an insurance run on two more hits as the Hornets defeated UC Santa Barbara in the first game of a three game Big West baseball series Friday, 8-6.
The game see-sawed for the first eight innings. Sac State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when right fielder Ryan Brown singled with one out. After a flyout by Lusk, center fielder Jimmy McFarland doubled to right center and when Gaucho second baseman Chad Peshke's relay to the plate sailed past catcher Donovan Warrecker, Brown came up with the run.
The Hornets upped their lead to 2-0 in the third. First baseman Tim Maghan led things off with a double down the left field line. Second baseman Carlos Morales then singled to right field and when UCSB right fielder Andy Campanella bobbled the ball, Maghan came home to score.
After cutting the lead in half with a run in the bottom half of the third, the Gauchos piled up four runs in the home half of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. Peshke led the inning off with a double to right center and after a groundout by designated hitter Dave Molidor, first baseman Tyler Von Schell walked. One-out later, Warrecker singled down the right field line, scoring Peshke with the tying run and sending Von Schell to third. Thid baseman Jon Stephens then hit a towering home run to left field, giving UCSB their 5-2 advantage.
The Hornet responded with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth. With one out designated hitter Casey Martinez singled to left. Third baseman Mike Butler then doubled down the left field line with Martinez stopping at third. Brown's single to right drove in both runners, cutting the lead to 5-4. Lusk then singled to right with Brown moving to third. After McFarland struck out swinging, shortstop Jesse Krebs singled home the tying run.
UCSB broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth when, with two outs, shortstop Jeff Bannon walked and was doubled in by Warrecker.
The Hornets tied the score in the eighth. With one out Maghan was safe on a fielding error by Stephens at third base. Morales then doubled with Maghan stopping at third. A single to right by left fielder Rick Gonzalez tied the score with Morales stopping at third. Gonzalez was the final batter that UCSB starter Gabe Neboyia faced. Freshman reliever Jim Bullard came in to get the final two outs of the inning, stranding a pair of runners and setting the stage for Lusk's heroics in the top of the ninth.
With the loss, the Gauchos' overall record drops to 24-24 and their Big West mark slips to 14-11. Sacramento State, which collected 19 hits on the day, improves to 21-30 overall and 13-12 in league. Bullard was credited with the loss, he is now 3-3 on the season while reliever Steve Cuckovich went two hitless innings to record the win and improve to 5-1. Chad Elliott started for Sac State, going seven innings and allowing all six earned runs.
UCSB and Sacramento State will return to Caesar Uyesaka Stadium on Saturday for a 12 Noon game.
