Baseball Takes The Series Against Pacific With 9-3 Win

May 12, 2002

STOCKTON, Calif. - After giving up three runs in the first inning, UC Santa Barbara (19-30, 5-13 Big West) starter Matt Vasquez, combined with Jeremy Sugarman and James Garcia, shutdown Pacific (25-23, 6-12 Big West) for the rest of the game, winning 9-3 in Big West Conference action Sunday afternoon at Billy Hebert Field.

With the win, the Gauchos take the three-game series 2-1 to claim their first Big West series win this year.

Despite allowing three runs in the first inning, Vasquez (Santa Barbara, Calif.) regained his composure and shutdown the Tiger offense for the next six innings, while striking out seven in the process, to win his fifth game of the season. Sugarman (Malibu, Calif.) threw a scoreless eighth and Garcia (Torrance, Calif.) threw a shutout ninth, to close the game.

The Gaucho offense rebounded with two runs in the third, when catcher Taylor Vogt (Burlingame, Calif.) drove in second baseman Chris Malec (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Dave Licht (Huntington Beach, Calif.) with a two out single to left, making it a 3-2 ballgame.

An RBI triple by left fielder Blair Havens (Los Alamitos, Calif.), sandwiched in-between two runs on wild pitches would give UCSB a 5-3 lead that it would not relinquish.

UCSB would go on to tack on four more insurance runs, scoring one in the eighth and three in the ninth.

Havens also led the Gauchos at the plate, going 3-for-6 with a run and two RBI. Vogt and third baseman Nate Sutton (Santa Cruz, Calif.) also had good games at the plate, with two hits apiece.

Brian Huck takes the loss for the Tigers, in relief of starter Ryan Jurvakainen. Cory Lake led Pacific offensively, going 3-for-3 with a double, run and RBI.

For the series, the Gaucho pitching staff held Pacific to eight hits or less, in all three games-19 overall-marking the first time that had occurred all season. The 10 runs allowed in the three games was also a season lowin a series.

UCSB returns to action for their final three home games of the season, when they host Sacrament State, May 17-19, at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
