Gauchos Slip 9-5 to UC Irvine in Final Home Game of the Season

Seniors David Figoni, Loren Fraser, Matt Kalafatis, Matt Stevens, Alex McRobbie, Matt Wilkerson and Chris Malec all put their blue and white home jerseys on for the final time as the UC Santa Barbara baseball team (23-30, 5-13) was defeated by UC Irvine (30-23,9-9), 9-5, in a Big West Conference match-up on Sunday Afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. The Gauchos finish-up the season with a 16-14 record at home.
UCI jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with the help of two miscues by freshman third baseman Matt Aidem.
The Anteaters extended their lead to three runs with a RBI-single by second baseman Brett Dalton.
The Gauchos cut the lead down to one run in the bottom of the third inning. Junior center fielder Matt Emerick reached base on a walk and moved over to second on a past ball by UCI catcher Mark Wagner. Emerick was cashed-in on Stevens' double down the left field line. Freshman Alden Carrithers followed with a single to center field to score Stevens from second base.
UC Irvine pulled ahead by two in the top of the fourth inning as center fielder Ollie Linton hit a RBI-double to left field.
Santa Barbara would once again make it a one run affair as Kalafatis doubled to right center field to score Aidem who reached base on an error by UCI first baseman Matt Anderson.
The Anteaters would put one more across in the top of the sixth before UCSB tied up the ball game in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs, the Gauchos strung together three base hits. Carrithers doubled to right field and came around to score on an infield single by senior designated hitter David Figoni. Senior shortstop Chris Malec wasted no time driving in Figoni as he doubled to right field.
UC Irvine would pull ahead for good in the top of the eighth as Malec committed the fourth Gaucho error of the game. With two outs and senior closer Alex McRobbie on the mound, the Anteaters scored three runs off two hits.
UCI made it a 9-5 affair as left fielder Erik Johnson drove in designated hitter R.J. Brown with his triple to right center field.
Sophomore starting pitcher Andy Graham (4-7) recorded the loss, tossing 7.1 innings and giving up seven runs (four earned) off seven hits while striking out six.
UC Irvine starter Justin Cassel picked up the victory as he allowed eight hits and five runs (three earned) in 7.0 innings of work. Closer Blair Erickson tallied the save (10) with his 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.
UCSB concludes the regular season this weekend as it heads down to Cal State Northridge for a three-game set beginning Friday, May 27 at 3:00 pm. Game two is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start on Saturday. Sunday's series finale is also slated for a 1:00 pm first pitch.
